I adore learning new things and trying to push myself creatively- it is what makes me want to get up every day and photograph. I believe that sometimes you need to step outside your comfort zone to truly create something artistic and to keep the love affair with your profession fresh and exciting. That being said, when I saw my favorite photographer, Elizabeth Messina ( kissthegroom.com ), was holding a workshop…I leapt at the chance to see her in action. Luckily for me, not only is she brilliant to watch, but she is also a wonderfully warm, kind, and compassionate person as well. I think I had one of the most amazing weeks of my life during her workshop!
The workshop was a dream come true on so many levels. Every class session, we were treated with little gifts…to make us feel special. Rather than class being a lecture, it was more of a wonderful conversation between new friends. I met some wonderful photographers-whom were each amazingly talented in their own way. Each day had us shooting the most beautiful vignettes… I mean breath-taking! I didn’t want to leave!
So the part where I stepped out of my comfort zone was, well, that I shot medium format film the whole time! Now, I am sure most of you know how dependent we are on digital imagery…checking out the back of the camera immediately to see how the picture came out! Whoa, it was so strange not to look at the camera! I used to shoot film…but more for fun never without a digital backup. Most importantly, it made me really think about what I was shooting, the light, the pose, the fact that there are only 16 images per roll of film. I had to make each image count! And in the end, I am so pleased…I love how film reacts to light! Each of the images below was photographed with the contax 645 on Fuji 400h film. Processed and scanned by richard photo lab.
Over the next month or so, I will be sharing the images from A Lovely Workshop…because there are way too many for one post! I have to give credit to the AMAZING professionals who made this all possible.
